Platycerium “Elemaria”, also known as P. “Elemaria Sanchez”, after Ernie Sanchez, that had it pop up in his collection. Found to be a hybrid of P. andinum x P. elephantiasis (originally reported to be a P. stemaria cross). This hybrid differs from it’s parent species by being a bit more cold tolerant. I have it take down to about 40°F before I move it into the greenhouse. Both parents I move when it’s in the 60’s or they appear to decline. This hybrid also keeps it’s shield fronds green longer than either parent.
While it’s reported to be sterile, I have 5-20% of the spores result in viable plants. It does produce very little in terms of spores, however. I haven’t been able to hybridized it with other ferns, but I keep trying!
This species forms clumps/rings around mounts or trees, similar to P. elephantosis.
Pictured is my largest specimen, almost 4’ (1.3m) in length.
